Tested by Fire: Cultivating Praise in the Midst of the Fight
Oh, sweet friend, pull up a chair. I want to talk about something deep today, something that feels very close to home after the last month.
If you’ve been with me for a while, you’ll remember my last post was a love letter to the Name of Jesus—a heartfelt call to praise the Lord with every breath. It was a beautiful moment of dedication, a promise to honor Him in everything. But as I’ve learned, and as I imagine you have too, sometimes when we make those heartfelt declarations, the testing follows close behind.
We hear the phrase, "Be careful what you pray for," and while that can sound harsh, I'm learning to see it as a gentle warning wrapped in a powerful truth: what we dedicate to the Lord will be purified. The Bible talks about being forged in fire, and truly, this past month has felt spot on. My spirit was willing, ready to rise at dawn and be intentional in my quiet time, but the body? The body has been weak.
He attacks our children, our peace, and our time. It starts with little distractions, doom scrolling instead of opening the bible app. For me, it was a gentle "5 minutes of distraction won't hurt, I'll sing praise and open the Bible afterwards." Afterwards, it never came. It was followed by a tragedy that led to more distractions. The desire to escape into mindless scrolling increased. The workload in the home increased. Sleep disintegrated as the children were up all night long. Balancing understanding behavioral shifts, sleep deprivation, and work, Christ took a back seat.
The saying is true: if the devil can't make you bad, he will make you busy. When we are stretched thin and operating on empty, the enemy doesn't need a grand strategy; he just needs to leverage our exhaustion. The goal is simple: distraction. It is the subtle, quiet thief of our focus, stealing the precious moments we reserve for dwelling with the Lord.
I’ve had days where I felt like I was failing, stumbling over small things, and then days where I stood firm, held my ground, and remembered to speak His Name over the chaos. But whether the fire I’ve been feeling is divine testing or a strategic spiritual warfare attack, my answer remains the same: I stand firm, I will praise the Name of Jesus.
The Pattern of the Attack
As fellow moms trying to cultivate a life of peace, we're seeking to establish grace-filled homes. And yet, how often do we see a wave of attack, discord, or sheer exhaustion roll in right after a season of revival, a deep dedication, or a step of faith? These instances are not random. They are setting clear patterns that, if we choose to see them, scream a profound truth: there is a God, and spiritual warfare is real.
If you’ve ever questioned it, look at the consistency. The Enemy doesn't waste energy on those who aren't moving toward the light. If you are being tested, sister, it means you are a threat.
But I want you to know something deep in your bones: when you are in the shadows, you are not alone. This is a shared journey, and our enemy's tactics are often predictable. Recognizing the pattern is the first step in dismantling it. It allows us to move from reacting in exhaustion to responding with intentional strength rooted in Christ.
Dwelling with the Lord: Our Enduring Rhythm
When I find myself overwhelmed, I often turn to the stories of those who went before us. David, the shepherd boy God chose to lead His people, knew intimately what it meant to face shadows.
In the midst of his darkest times, David understood the power of praise, not just as a triumphant shout, but as a deep, peaceful declaration of allegiance. There’s a beautiful scene in the new movie David where he faces his death not in fear, but saying that even if he dies, the Lord is his reward. All he wants is to dwell with the Lord.
I implore you, friend, look at David’s heart. His whole life—the shepherding, the fighting, the ruling, and the running—was a ministry aimed at one ultimate purpose: to dwell with the Lord.
What an honor it is to live our lives with this purpose! It’s the ultimate, sustainable rhythm we are seeking. It’s the thing that nourishes us when the enemy tries to drain us.
Let's not get lost in the urgency of "winning" a battle in our own strength. Let’s remember that our victory is sealed, and our calling is simply to keep our eyes fixed on Him. As we cultivate moments of praise and establish gentle routines that keep us close to the heart of Jesus, we are creating a grace-filled rhythm that the fire cannot consume.
Stand firm, sweet one. Your faith is being proven, and your God is close.
Heavenly Father,
We come before You now, standing in the truth that You are greater than the fire we face. We thank You for proving our faith and for keeping us close, even when we drift. Lord, we ask for an infusion of Your peace—the peace that surpasses all understanding—to guard our hearts and minds against the weariness and the attack.
Grant us the strength to live by Your Spirit today. Help us to resist the urge to escape and to run to Your Word instead of the world's distractions. May we be intentional in every moment, recognizing that every breath is an opportunity to honor You.
When the enemy tries to steal our praise, bind our tongues, or exhaust our souls, remind us of Your ultimate victory. Cultivate in us a heart that chooses to praise the Name of Jesus in the chaos, in the quiet, and in the exhaustion.
Let the rhythm of our lives be rooted in dwelling with You, and may we declare Your goodness with every beat of our heart.
In Jesus’ powerful Name, Amen.
